Point Brake Trail Day

We had a fantastic trail day last Sunday and came very close to finishing Majura Pines newest trail, Point Brake. We will be running a short trail day this Sunday (2nd April) from 12:30 to put the finishing touches to this exciting gully run.

The plan is to work for a couple of hours, then be the first to ride the completed trail before retiring to Wilburs Cafe Bar at Hackett shops to toast our suceess at around 4pm.

Meet at the bottom of Boy Wonder / Rock Lobster. You will have to ride in to this spot, but that is ok as you will need your bike for trail testing later.

Monkey Bridge

A huge thank you to Monkey Wrench Cycles for purchasing the timber that has allowed us to construct the 20m long Monkey Bridge around the dam on Bogs and Logs. As well as being a cool feature it will mean this trail stays drier in the winter.

Monkey Wrench Cycles is a bicycle service and repair centre and shop located at the Hackett shops. Please support the local businesses that support our trails.

It's the news that we have been waiting for! ACT Parks and Conservation Services have nearly finished cutting all the fallen trees and making the forest safe. This Wednesday (7th) Majura Pines Trail Alliance are combining with local riding group The Berm to have a clean up evening. Either meet at Hackett shops at 6.30pm to ride in to the forest, or come straight to the MPTA container for about 6.40pm. Majura Pines CLOSED

There is storm damage throughout the forest with most trails blocked and many hanging, dangerous trees. Majura Pines Trail Alliance are working with ACT Parks to clear the trees. Unfortunately some areas will have to be felled completely as they have become unsafe.

When the damage has been assessed, any hanging trees made safe and the ground started to dry out we will plan some volunteer days to start the clean up.

21st September 2016

Majura Pines Trail Alliance have been collecting trail statistics for just over a year now. In that time there were over 26,000 rides on the main trails to the west of the Majura Parkway. (We have not included usage of the beginner trails, pump track and dirt jumps here as they are a little harder to measure).

HIGH WINDS FELLING MORE TREES AT MAJURA

We have had a report of a tree falling near the bottom of Planet Claire - whilst two riders were there.

WE STRONGLY ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT RIDE AT MAJURA TODAY (Friday 19th). It is highly likely that more trees will fall.

If you are riding at the weekend look out for newly fallen trees and please let us know their location so we can arrange for them to be cleared.

Majura Pines CLOSED

The Majura Pines trails have been closed following the recent bad weather. Please observe the closure as it is for your own safety, will allow chainsaw operators to clear the damage and for the good of the very wet trails. The official statement from ACT Government:

Majura Pines temporarily closed for safety. The ACT Government wishes to advise the public that the Majura Pines recreation area, including the mountain bike trails, is closed due to recent inclement weather. There are a number of fallen or hanging trees in the area. The trails are also saturated so the closure will reduce further damage to the network. The ACT Government is currently working to clear fallen trees. Staff will be on site this week to assess trees and remove them if required. The closure will be in place until Wednesday 3 August 2016. Updates will be provided if the closure can be lifted earlier. For more information contact Access Canberra on 13 22 81 or visit www.environment.act.gov.au

Latest Trails Update

Important trail update: We visited this morning to inspect more trails and discuss works with the Rangers from PCS who are in the process of clearing trees. However due to the amount of fallen and leaning trees we have closed two entire compartments. Firstly the lower compartment in the most South section containing Lower Planet Clare and Love Shack, and secondly the area containing Bogs and Logs, Mata Hari and Mudhoney. Please observe all trail closures for your own safety until the rangers and MPTA have completed the work.

Further update: A big thanks to the efforts from the rangers from ACT Government Parks and Conservation Services who have cleared trees for us on Pinot Grinio, Bombora, Smitten Kitten, Boy Wonder and AJs Leap. All diversions have been removed and these trails are good to ride. Also the hard working volunteers from MPTA just got back from an inspection of Auto Alley and are happy to report the entire section is free from trees and in great condition.

A reminder though that Rock Lobster and the two entire compartments where the largest amount of trees fell are still closed for your safety.

For detailed trail status information please see our Trail Status page here:

Many Fallen Trees at Majura

Warning to riders heading to Majura Pines this weekend. After the crazy weather we had on Wednesday night there are many trees down. Please exercise caution and observe any trail closures.

With so many trees down it might be best to list the trails that you can ride. Our best suggestion for a ride is Larry, Barry and Planet Clare (not the lower section) then take the fire road to the other end and head up Mr Squiggle, Batcave and down Pinot Ginio (with a diversion around a tree), and Bombora (again with an avoidable tree near the end). Some North South XC link trails are open, but most have way too many trees to even try to get around and avoid. It's just not worth - seriously!

ACT Parks and Conservation Services are aware of the problems and will be assessing the damage in the morning.

27th June 2016

Trail Maintenance Day including new boardwalk

There will be a Majura Pines Trail Alliance trail maintenance day this Sunday, 3rd July. Our biggest priority will be to install a new boardwalk feature around the small dam on Bogs & Logs. The timber for this has been kindly supplied by Monkey Wrench Cycles. Our thanks to them for their continued support of Majura Pines.

If you have a cordless drill please bring it along with all of your charged up batteries.

Meet at the MPTA storage container on the main fireroad (Monterey Rd) about 200 metres south of the Mudhoneys - Mr Squiggle junctionat 08:30. The closest place to park is the winery gate (near end of Bombora). If you are late come and find us at the dam at the southern end of Bogs and Logs. Hot and cold drinks and snacks will be provided. We will work until around midday or until the boardwalk is finished!

Mud Glorious Mud

Thanks to the 8 volunteers who braved mud this morning to complete some much needed trail maintenance at Majura Pines. Work done this morning included fixing drainage on Lincoln, a new updated rock bridge near the Tiki Bar on Love Shack, and some major drainage works on Sleepy Hollow. Lucky for us the predicted downpour held off and we had a very productive day.

Trail Maintenance Day

There will be a very important Majura Pines Trail Alliance trail maintenance day this Sunday, 19th June. We will be addressing some of the drainage issues so that the trails can be kept open and running well throughout the winter.

Meet at the bottom of Boy Wonder (where Planet Claire crossses the fire road) at 8.30am. You will need a bike to get in to this spot either from Hackett or one of the other car parks. If you need a lift in to the forest we will be bringing a couple of cars in at about 0815 through the gate nearest to the winery. These cars won't be leaving until the end of session at around midday.

Don't forget to bring:

16th May 2016

Mount Majura Nature Reserve Closed At Night

As of today Mount Majura Nature Reserve will be closed between the hours of 5pm and 7am everyday until 1st August because of the ACT government 2016 kangaroo control program. The Majura Pines will not be accessible from Hackett/Ainslie side between these hours. The mountain bike trails within the Majura Pines will stay open but you will only be able access them from the Majura Parkway side.

From TAMS: Today the conservation cull of Eastern Grey kangaroos is beginning in a number of reserves until Monday 1st August 2016, including Mount Majura Nature Reserve. It will be important for riders who travel to Majura Pines via Majura Nature Reserve to be very aware of the reserve closure hours (5pm – 7am) and the fines which apply under the Nature Conservation Act 2014 for entering closed reserves; this includes Blue Metal Road fire trail which leads to the pines from Mackenzie St gate in Hackett.

Barry

Thanks to the rider/s who pulled down the bunting on Barry yesterday this trail was re-opened sooner than intended. It is hoped that the heavy weekend traffic whilst the berms had still to set won't have any long term detrimental effects.

New Winery Trails

The recently completed new trails on winery hill have now been sign posted and added to the Majura Pines Trail Alliance maps. To download the latest trail map check out the maps page on our website.

Some more information about the new trails:

Rock Block is a tough two way trail. As a climb it is a technical lung buster. As a descent you will have to work hard at first, especially around the rocky knob in the NE, before a series of challenging corners gradually open out to some faster trail. Watch out for the epic tree roll over near the bottom. Rock Block is also the name of a wine from the Mount Majura Vineyard, which this trail offers great views of.

Magic Roundabout is an extension of an existing trail all the way to the end of Bombora. It offers a more direct, but all singletrack, link to winery hill for those parking at the winery gate, who have just finished Bomobora and want to go straight back up for more fun or riders emerging from the northern end of Bogs and Logs.

Please take are accessing the bottom of Rock Block where the trail crosses/joins Bombora.

06th May 2016

Pinot Grinio OPEN

Pinot Grinio is open again after firming up a bit after the limited rain we had at the weekend. Please ride it with care as the trail surface beds in.

Some of the corners on Barry remain very soft so it is going to stay closed for a while longer; the forecast looks promising for more rain for this weekend.

28th April 2016

Pinot Grinio and Barry Closed this Weekend

Following on from Jindabyne Landscaping's maintenance, Pinot Grinio and Barry will be closed this weekend to allow the very dry, loose trails to consolidate. Please respect these closures for the long term good of the trails. Planet Claire will remain open but please ride it with care. Hopefully we will get the forecast rain.

For all you midweek riders, the pipeline works have now moved to Blue Metal Rd (main access fire road from Hackett to Majura Pines). Please take care when accessing around the road works. Do not pass through any barriers as machinery is operating and only pass when the workmen indicate that it is safe to do so. They will do their best to let you through as soon as they can.

Gas Pipeline Works

Work has commenced on a gas pipeline from Hackett to the AFP training centre near Majura Road. There will be some disruption to access to Majura Pines from the Hackett side although it is expected to be limited. Work will commence from the Majura Rd side and run up the southern boundary of the Pines and then along along Blue Metal Rd to Hackett. Access to the top of AJs Leap and possibly through the top gate will be disrupted temporarily once they reach that section of the forest as they cross AJs Leap and exit the forest near the top gate. We will let you know when this is likely to occur. Temporary fencing and warning lights will be placed around the construction area but please keep your distance and avoid any holes. The project is expected to be completed in 6 to 8 weeks. If you have any problems or questions please let us know.

Putting the Awe in Auto Alley

Thanks to everyone who attended yesterday's build day on Auto Alley. Some great new trail with plenty of (very!) steep pinches and awesome rock features were built. Any fears that Auto Alley would be dumbed down can be discarded. Whilst the trail is open to ride, not all of the new sections link up or will make sense yet.

Thanks to Michael Struik for the photo.

Main XC Loop Completed

We had an awesome trail day on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who helped out yesterday and at trail days over the last few months. As a group we have now competed the main XC loop through the Pines, which has been a huge achievement in a short period of time and has been well received if the amount of bike traffic through the Pines is any thing to go by.

Yesterday, we completed the Love Shack link in the southernmost compartment that links the bottom of the new DH trail (Planet Claire) to the XC loop and the climb back up to the gate at the top of forest. We also moved the bottom entrance of the southern climb (AJ's Leap) about 50 metres south on the main fire road to link with the top of Love Shack.

Our next trail day is scheduled for Sunday 29 March. However, we've done enough trail building lately and instead we thought we should have a ride day instead to enjoy the trails we've built, followed by a BBQ and some drinks afterward. We'll confirm details later this week.

Winery Hill Open

Jindabyne Landscaping have opened the trails on winery hill and the creek run below them - for now anyway. Beware tha these trails are very very soft and require a lot of rain for them to bed in.

Smitten Kitten Complete

A huge thank you to the 30 volunteers who dug, scraped, dragged and lifted on Sunday at the Majura Pines build day. With your help we completed the new Smitten Kitten trail that that winds its way up the hill parallel to the northern Innabaanya boundary completely separate from the existing Pitt St trail. Check out the attached map.

We have now completed the core of the central XC loop with just the compartments at the far north and south to be done before Easter. The next build day will be on Sunday 1st March. More details closer to the time.

Big Thanks to CORC and Mount Majura Vineyard

Great work from the 20 volunteers who today braved the dust and heat to cut in more great singletrack at the Majura Pines. The new swoopy return trail parallel to Pitt St is now approximately half done. Hopefully we will be able to finish it next week.

Everyone enjoyed cold drinks, beers and a BBQ supplied by our friends at CORC - Canberra Off Road Cyclists and Mount Majura Vineyard. Our huge thanks to them for their support.

Massive Turn Out at First Trail Build of 2015

A huge thanks to the 40 (!) volunteers that came out this morning to lend a hand at the Maujra Pines trail build. Under the expert watchful eye of Craig and Paul from Jindabyne Landscaping we got heaps of sweet sweet singletrack cut in with berms, jumps, A & B lines, flow and, of course, good drainage.

There are a few more photos here on the MPTA facebook page.

There is still lots and lots of work to be done to get Majura back to its former glory. The next trail build will be on Sunday 8th February. More details to follow.

22 January 2015

Volunteer Trail Day and Trail Building Clinic

The next volunteer trail building day will Sunday 1 February from 8.30 am to 1 pm. Craig Stonestreet from Jindabyne Landscaping will be joining us to conduct a trail building clinic throughout the morning as we build. So an opportunity not to be missed to learn all the tricks of the trade.

Meet at the Jindabyne Landscaping compound on the side fireroad south of the Innabaanya compartment, just north of Lincoln (between Compartments I and J on the attached map). Meet there at 8.30 am or 8.15 am at the MacKenzie St gate for a lift into the forest.

Don't forget to bring:

The following trail day will then be held on Sunday 8 February.

Trail Construction Has Commenced

Jindabybe Landscaping have commenced trail construction at Majura Pines. They will be concentrating on the DH trails on the hill at the southern end of the Pines (near the Hackett entrance) and the trails on Winery Hill. Trails and compartments will be closed off where they're working and will be progressively re-opened as they complete each section. Please respect the barriers and stay out of the construction areas.

Boy Wonder will remain open during the construction and much of the forest will remain open to ride throughout. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of March.

You can read the official Press Release about the work at Majura commencing here.

Current Majura Trails

The map above (click to enlarge) shows the current trails in existence at Majura Pines. Some of these trails are the existing trails that have been uncovered, others have been recently built by trail fairies not connected to Majura Pines Trail Alliance. It is likely that PCS will close any trails that don't fit in to their recently commissioned master plan. MPTA would like to work with the trail fairies to incorporate their trails in to the overall plan. Please contact us at majurapinestrails@gmail.com

First Volunteer Build Days Held

The first two MPTA build days saw around 15 eager volunteers at each day keen to lend a hand and bring the Majura trails back to their former glory. Work was undertaken on Boy Wonder, a linking trail in the next compartment below and the upper trail across the Innabaanya compartment. There is now a reasonable upper XC link, utitlising many of the uncovered old trails, the length of the network.

Planning for the 2015 volunteer work scope and trail dates is underway at the moment. A priority will be completing the lower side of the loop which needs much work.

Jindabyne Landscaping Announced as Contractor

Jindabyne Landscaping have been announced as the contractor to complete the professional scope of works at Majura Pines. This consists of 3 downhill trails, including Winery hill, and the skills area. They will commence work on 19th January 2015 and aim to be completed by April 2015.

Their announcement:

I'm super stoked to announce that Jindabyne Landscaping have won the contract to rebuild "Majura Pines," with Craig Stonestreet and myself leading the design and building team. For those of you who know us Andy, Craig and myself have embarked on a trail building frenzy up here in the Mountains, building the Thredbo Valley Trail, Lake Crackenback, Bungarra network, Tyrolean network, Thredbo B-line, Mill Creek trail, Copper tom Trail, Bicentennial trail, Baw Baw DH and other skills parks and pump tracks. About 3 months ago we heard Majura Pines was being turned into a recreational area. Having lived in Canberra for over 32 years Majura was the birth place of my single trail MTB riding. I rode with a young guy called Jarod Rando and first bumped into a young kid, Dylan Cooper out on the trails at Majura. We will be moving to Canberra around January and weather permitting finish Majura Pines early April. I'm not going to say much more other than 3 months, 3 Downhill trails, numerous cross country trails, 2 excavators and a promise to build Majura back up to its place as one of the country's leading MTB area's....stay Tuned. I'm so dam excited! First walk through yesterday with Katherine, Sophie and Andrew from the ACT government and Craig and Andy. Paul Gardner
